What were you taught about religion?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for February 04, 2008:
In my birth family being Catholic was considered terrible. There is an understandable reason for why that Mother had her issues. At Nine years of age I was adopted by a Lutheran ministers family. In 1950's being Catholic was considered a belief of ignorance and fear. I got punished for liking a Catholic boy once in my teens. Take two family systems, both very anti-Catholic.
Further on I was taught by DAD the minister that god loved me and that if I was good I would go to heaven. Somewhere around 12 I knew the story was untrue. My Dad said I had to believe because it was so.....Faith he said. Believe in the unseen. I figured if a god of that opinion didn't love me unless I was good he was not my deal. Adults making decisions for me weren't doing so well, neither would the god they believed in. It was my ball game.
I took what worked for me, left the rest. My Grandson <21yo> says Grams.you treat belief like a smorgasbord. Yes, I do. I keep what works, till it doesn't

Help

I always wondered why some people hated Catholics. I was raised Catholic and left the Church because I didn't agree with it, but I never understood why some people absolutely hated us and thought we were going to hell.
In my biological mothers case it was because her Dad remarried a woman that didn't want her living with them so she was raised by her Dads mother. The WOMAN was the Catholic.
In my adoption home, my Dad the minister believed that catholics got it wrong. About Mary, about the Pope being the authority. He explained that it was a reworking of old Pagan beliefs. Hum…….What did Martin Luther think in is time? Does it really matter beyond the fact that, in my opinion most organized religion until just recently teaches law……and exclusivity.
